It seems that everywhere I look, new companies are opening their doors, and in need of furniture to finish their spaces. One such business contacted us near Thanksgiving to build a desk for their new space. A franchise owner, the young businesswoman had a set plan and design to be followed, which didn’t allow our usual creativity to reign, but we were easily able to create the modern, sleek area she needed.
A cleat system allowed us to create a floating desk that spanned a 7 foot wide area allowing ample work surface to check in clients, and receive payments.
To provide the structural stability to span the 84 inches, we created a torsion box, clad on top and bottom with furniture-grade plywood. A simple structure using what a grid setup between the layers of plywood allows for incredible strength and keeps things from wracking or warping.
We insured all imperfections in the surface were filled, then edge-banded the plywood, sanded to 150, and applied 2 coats of a water-based primer, followed with 4 coats of a low-VOC water-based enamel paint in the client’s custom color choice.
Being a custom piece require the construction of the desk to be done in the shop and the installation to take place on site at the client’s location. Cleats were fastened to the wall on the studs, and the desk was custom scribed and slipped into place, then fastened to the cleats from top and bottom. Part of this project also required custom trim molding surrounding the desk space, which we created using solid maple stock.
After a half-day of installation and touch-ups, her space was ready to receive clients and welcome them warmly to her business.
