When we first moved into our home, there was a great family just 2 doors down. They happened to be someone my wife knew from her childhood, and their sons, now grown, were kids she’s known since they were little. It was pretty cool to move into our neighborhood, and see them finish high school, and then go off into college and the Marines. After the Marine came home, he hung out around the shop and started picking up tools and working alongside us…along the way, he met an amazing young lady, who also happened to be Military, and a racer. Over her career, she’s garnered many race medals, but had nowhere to display them. After a few months of dating and many races together, he decided she needed a place to display them.
We took this figured piece, sanded it smooth, and used a clear Polycrilic to finish it. Accented with a pair of walnut brackets, a dowel rod, and, yes, a casing from a round of ammunition in tribute to her service, this piece is elegant and simple, but still beautiful.
Placed under the Christmas tree back in 2015, she fell in love with it, and has it hung in her place with her medals proudly on display.
