A customer approached us with their antique mahogany dining table, a piece which had been in the family for awhile and come to them. The style didn’t fit any of their rooms, but they hated the idea of selling or discarding it. They asked us to restore it and voiced their concerns about it finding a forever home with a new family. We happened to be chatting about school and study space for the kids, and mentioned in passing that we could easily turn the table into desks for their 2 children. They loved the idea and we went to work.
As the table leaves were missing, we removed the expansion hardware, stabilized the legs, and cleaned and sanded the whole thing. Using a mahogany gel stain for the top, and for the gently curving Victorian style legs, we chose a durable Urethane top coat to finish.
The tabletop halves are the perfect size for their children to use for homework, puzzles, and other craft projects, and are being used daily.
