A client reached out to us to restore his old console radio cabinet. This unit, dating to around 1950, was in his family for a good while, and he was the one who got to take it when everyone started moving away. The finish was cracked and coming off in places, the knobs had broken and been replaced with mismatched, over-sized pieces, and there were scratches and dents.
To keep the character for the customer, we used a mild cleaning solution, and safely removed the shellac. We matched the stain and touched up the areas that needed it, then used an amber shellac to finish it. We sourced reproduction period knobs for the controls, and cleaned the glass, metal and few pieces of plastic.
We’re truly hoping that he was able to repair the old tube radio and can now listen to his favorite stations on this newly revived piece of his childhood.
