As we all know, there are always those family pieces that are passed along to a grandchild, and in some cases, they arrive very well-loved, needing repairs and sometimes new finish.
Such was the case with the antique dining table that we were asked to restore. This double-drop leaf table had 8 leaves that allow the table to extend to over 13ft for large groups. A gorgrous piece in its prime, the surface was badly scratched and chipped, and the legs had become quite unstable.
We were able to deconstruct the table and repair the joints on the table legs with just a little bit of work. Once the repairs were completed and the table was stable once again, we cleaned and greased the runners, tightened anything that needed tightening and set to work on the surface damage.
A light sanding, and a thorough cleaning were all it took to get us ready to match the stain. We found a perfect match in a beautiful Mahogany, and applied a coat to the table, legs, and all 8 leaves.
Once dry, we used an oil-based semi-gloss Polyurethane and applied 5 coats to provide maximum protection. Once the finish was dry and cured, we buffed, waxed and polished the table.
Upon delivery, our client fell in love with her grandmother’s table all over again and it now graces her formal dining space.
