We were contacted awhile back by a client who’d suffered a house fire. They lost just about everything and were rebuilding their house. The few pieces of furniture that didn’t get damaged during the fire included a beautiful maple table with mahogany inlay, with a sleek modern feel to it. The wood of the table was undamaged by the fire, only dried out immensely, and in need of a good refinishing.
Originally, the client wanted a darker finish, to go with the more modern feel of their rebuilt house, and we set out to oblige.
We sanded through the existing finish and checked all the joints to insure there was no racking or warping of the table.
We created a storyboard for the client to show severl different stains, and they selected one they liked. With their approval, we applied 3 coats of semi-gloss poly urethane, and delivered the table. They expressed their happiness and we drove away. By the time we got home, we had several voice and text messages stating they weren’t quite as happy as they’d originally thought and wanted us to fix the problems.
We picked the table up again and brought it back to the shop where we sanded back to bare wood. After several attempts to find a color they loved, they decided to leave the table as the natural clear it had originally been. we applied 4 coats of clear polyurethane and returned the table a second time with a flawless semi-gloss finish, smooth as glass and crystal clear.
They fell in love with it all over again, and are thrilled to have this cusom table back in their kitchen.
