We were contacted by a client to create adjustable workstations for his new office. He was opening a space for entrepreneurs to rent and use as their office, but needed a space dedicated to their work, to meet clients and network.
Based on his request for a modern piece, we selected 8/4 Beetle Kill Pine to create a 12 foot long desktop, with a partition system creating 6 work spaces. Set atop custom 2 inch square metal tubing for legs, these sleek pieces provided a warm and inviting, yet clean space for people to work.
We started by milling the pine to insure for straight boards. Once milled, we glued up boards to create a 40 inch surface. We planed, and then sanded the surface to 100. Due to the nature of pine, we had to fill in the knot holes and irregularities left behind by nature. We mixed a 2-part epoxy with black dye and filled all the holes, splits, cracks and dents. Once the epoxy was cured, we sanded through the grits to 220.
Our client wanted a warm tone to the wood, so we chose to use General Finishes brand oil-based wipe on stain in Salem and ended up with a rich color highlighting the contrast of the clean pine and the signature blue left behind by the beetles. We followed this with 4 coats of oil-modified polyurethane in a satin finish.
The partitions were created out of 2 x 2 sections of pine with galvanize metal sheeting to allow privacy, a modern look, and a magnetic surface.
We were able to create 2 tables that were 12 feet long, and 4 smaller tables utilizing adjustable legs to allow for a standing or sitting space.
Our client was pleased with the marriage of warm wood and raw steel and has since ordered 4 more tables.
