Every so often, things happen that require our intervention. One such occasion occurred when a local Busines Services company had an employee inadvertently damage a table at a client’s location. The solvents they used to clean the printers and other office equipment had been left atop a 100 year old quarter sawn oak table the client used for depositions and other conference uses at their legal offices.
The solvents left some very bad damage, and the client reached out to us to have us rescue their heirloom.
An on-site refinish brings multiple challenges to us. We can’t bring the full shop with us to our clien’ts location, so we must plan for the things that might happen, or tools we might need. Add to this that the location was a functioning office, and we were left with a project that had to occur during the evenings and over a weekend. We packed up the tools and equipment we thought we might need, and headed over to their offices.
Upon entry, we found a gorgeous 12 foot long table with 100 years of patina. Unfortunately, we had to sand back to a completely bare top to get through the damage done by the solvents. This did allow us to have a clean palette to perform our magic. We sanded back to a 180 grit and applied 2 coats of General Finishes Spiced Walnut stain to match the rich tones of the base. The gorgeous figuring the white oak was once again an eye-catching feature of this beautiful table. After the stain was applied and dried, we hand-brushed 4 coats of crystal clear Oil-modified polyurethane. Once it was cured, we provided a hand-rubbed polish to bring a mirror shine to its top.
