The upside of having someone you know with a specific skillset and a business built around those skillsets is that you have a built-in source of informaition and expertise, and even occasionally an expert to care for your needs.
Zeh’s Custom Design is that expert for many people in our lives.
One such person was a friend and neighbor with a solid wood entry door that was beginning to split and let in the elements. Living in an upscale neighborhood with large, custom achictectural elements on the homes, our friend didn’t want to have to replace their door.
We set up shop on their covered front porch, and removed the door from its hinges. A few hours of sanding the remaining finish from the 9 foot raised-panel door created a smooth surface, and clear visibility on the large network of splits and cracks in the wood. Several knots had worked their way loose and the wood had simply dried out and begun to shrink and split. After thoroughly removing the dust from sanding, we used a 2-part epoxy that we tinted dark with some enamel paint, and we began the tedious process of filling the cracks and splits and knots. Once the epoxy was completely cured, we sanded the door again. Removing any excess epoxy from the surface of the door while leaving it in any cracks took time and attention to detail. The door was sanded to 220 to insure a smooth surface for the natural stain we applied. 2 coats of oil-based stain created a good foundation for a long-lasting entryway door. Followed up with 3 coats of Spar Urethane to provide the door with a weather-tight finish as well as protection from the sun, this door is set up to last many more seasons before needing more attention.
